Where is a canonical meta tag used?
A canonical meta tag is often used in large websites, such as online stores or advertising websites. These are websites that are database driven, whereby the same page content can be requested from several URLs. By specifying a canonical meta tag, the search engine crawler is forced to index only 1 URL. This results in a clear and uniform registration of a website's content, which in turn is beneficial for the ranking of the website's pages in the search engine results page (SERP).
